Tonight I am going to sleep ten hours to compensate for the six hours of sleep I totaled for the past forty-eight hours.
Last night found me riding from Highland Park to downtown Pasadena for a couple of rounds of pints with a couple of lads. My mother once puzzled over how people who ride everywhere can be so unhealthy.
It's easy.
I've realized I like really hoppy beer - hoppy like a jackrabbit.
I lost my headlight to a downhill battle with a very bumpy road. The sound it made when it hit the asphalt assured me that it could not be salvaged. Back to my dorky headband headlight while I order a replacement.
The good news today is that the United States Supreme Court has agreed to review lawsuits against Proposition 8, with hearings possibly proceeding as early as March.
We have to redirect our energy toward the court and the cases, assisting in any way we can.
Daily I climb up on a metaphorical stage and cry out to anyone who will listen regarding Prop 8. My friends hear it everyday, but with new friendships in the works, I can reach out to more people, delivering the importance of gay rights, regardless of orientation.
Last night over a pitcher of beer, a new friend - who admitted a more conservative stance - reassured me that it will happen. Give it time. Equality will come.
Give it time.
Last night on our ride, they tried to intimidate me with an upcoming gradual climb. A former cross country runner and current hill expert, I quietly set myself for the battle. I rode slowly but consistently, preserving my energy.
I could have climbed that hill forever.
When we crested I found myself thinking, "That was it?"
It is likewise that we must pursue justice.
The most rewarding aspect of an uphill battle is the downhill coast on the other side.
I think I will buy myself a really expensive bottle of champagne, and leave it corked until Prop 8 is overturned. On that day I will celebrate, because few other things have come to mean so much to me. The bottle will be an investment in the future and motivation to persevere.
You are all welcome to a glass.
