And don't let Valentine's Day get you down (Or take a bite out of your wallet!). Get drunk and check out these rad, inexpensive events, and who knows? You might just find yourself a sweetie for the weekend.
Here's wishing you the very best of luck!
So imagine my pleasure upon receiving an email from ThreadSpinner! I love hearing from artists because aside from the major ego-stroke, it demonstrates an ambition I can relate to. I dug what I heard on their MySpace, and included one of their songs in one of my playlist.
Catching ThreadSpinner at Molly Malone's after a gorgeous bike ride to Venice Beach was the perfect cap to a perfect day. Admittedly, theirs is not the type of music I generally seek out, but I was enthralled. Comprised of Sarah's vocals and piano-playing, Jonathan on guitar, Warren Crone on bass, and Jesse Cardin on drums, ThreadSpinner's sound is raw, haunting, unabashedly romantic, and tightly crafted. Their presence and genuine performance is really pleasing. I see a lot of success in their future, because I feel like their music attempts to build a personal connection with each and every listener.
ThreadSpinner is based in Santa Barbara, so if you're up there, I would definitely try to catch a show! And if you are lucky, they might perform their purely mesmerizing rendition of Nirvana's "Heart Shaped Box," which is a real treat, I promise you.
ThreadSpinner tries to keep it real, saying, "We're trying to be honest here. With this music. More than people are used to. More than WE are used to."
Greatest musical influences?
Radiohead, Over the Rhine, Sigur Ros
Those are the big ones. If I go beyond that, the list will get obnoxiously long.
What's your gear?
We love tube amps, old upright pianos, and the Hammond B3 organ with Leslie cabinet that is in our living room
Where can people find you?
Our webbish presence is at www.threadspinner.net
That's also where you can always find out where you can find us performing.
Other than that, you'll find me (Sarah) at my piano, hiking on the trails of Santa Barbara and at yoga classes, Jon on the basketball court, Warren racing around on his motorcycle, and Jesse meditating or taking care of abandoned cats.
What's your going out/pre-show ritual?
Part of me wishes I had a totally over the top answer, but the truth is we're pretty boring when it comes to this. We try to get lots of rest, I drink lots of hot tea and make sure I get in some yoga. Jesse has a thing with eating beef before a gig. We do a lot of hanging out together and laughing. That's always a good way to start an evening.
Something about you that most people don't know.
Sarah: I have a thing with trying to read people by really looking in their eyes. It really works, but very few people actually let me in.
Jon: I have a Ph.D from Stanford in Electrical Engineering, and I once performed at a beauty pageant (performed, not competed!)
Warren: I'm from Canada, was in the Army and speak French fluently.
Jesse: I am afraid a lot of the time. I don't think I'm a particularly good drummer. I like girls a lot.
