Dear California,
I will be partially pacified about this Prop 8 cowpie if you pull your head out of your ass and just legalize marijuana already instead of cutting off money for important stuff like college grants, welfare, and state parks. Me, some of my friends, and a two pound bag of Chex Mix will personally see to the state's budget problems if you just say the word.
Yours truly,
Liz
PS When the history books write about how California once banned gay marriage and pot, we're going to look stupid. And don't even get me started on the bike stuff.
Anyway....
WEEKEND IS COMING! And a it's a weekend of rest for me, so I get to hang out!
Critical Mass (Haven't decided east or west yet)

Not The Government Ramp Party

Saturday May 30th
BEAR CAVALRY Ride

Or I might go mountain biking - not sure!
See ya around!

Let me play devil's advocate for a moment.
You cannot fault the California Supreme Court for its decision. Remember, this is the same court that had overturned a previous ban. Appellate court justices (the Supreme Court is the ultimate appellate court) are trained to decide issues on the narrowest grounds possible. Read the opinion and you will see that the decision is a very narrow one. The pro-gay-lesbian-marriage people should have no problem drafting a measure to overturn Prop. 8. Don't blame the court, the justices were doing exactly what they are supposed to do - no more no less. You don't want an "activist" because, depending on the make up of the court, you may not like their decisions.
Also, don't blame "California." The anti Prop 8 people did a lousy job in winning the hearts and minds of California voters. Having Gavin Newson stand up and say things like, "gay marriages are here, whether people like it or not" was not helpful. It was like waving a red flag in fornt of a bull, We Americans don't like people telling us that we "have" to accept something, whether we like it or not. You wouldn't like it if Christians got on your face and said "you will convert, whether you like it or not."
Liz, don't get upset, but don't you find it odd that in the state with perhaps the most liberal population in the entire country (as well as the highest concentration of gays and lesbians) the general public is still against gay marriages? And isn't it odd that Mass., a "catholic" state allows gay marriages? If gays and lesbians are going to win the next round, they are going to have to do a better PR job. In my humble opinion "on your face" tactics do noting to advance one's cause. Why was MLK Jr. so effective? He made civil rights a "people issue" and not just a "black issue."
Just some food for thought as you get ready for round 2. BTW, California marijuana laws are pretty "enlightened" compared to, for example, Federal law. So don't bitch and moan about "California" (well, bitch and moan if you like and if it makes you feel better.
Remember what I have always taught you, the best persuasion is when you tug at their hearts' strings (whoever they happen to be) but leave no fingerprints. When you have an "unpopular" cause you have to fight smart.
BTW (part two) I had a nice bike ride, a steady headwind on the retun part of the ride, but it felt good.
Keep the faith!
As for the Supreme Court - couldn't more of them dissented though? I can still feel disappointed, right?
As for Prop 8...perhaps. But I am beginning to lose patience, and I am expressing that through humor. And Christians have converted people against their will. It seems to be their MO. Sometimes it feels that with some people their hatred is so deeply ingrained that it cannot be persuaded otherwise. A similar "hatred" exists to some extent toward...well, almost everyone who isn't a white male. My point is that some people will never accept gay marriage, just the same as they will never accept women in the workplace or a black man as president. And at some point you just have to give them the finger and march on.
Part 2: I'm learning how to rebuild a wheel and just had a fabulous hustle ride home.
