Sketchbook Oct 1 2008

The dismal truth is that this is the first time I'd opened my sketchbook to draw since August.

On the upside, I did open it. To work on some sketches for a piece to submit to the Echo Curio. In a collaboration between artists and writers, the shop is going to construct a Curious Bestiary.

Naturally my lack of practice makes me remarkably timid.

Sketchbook Oct 1 2008.

I took Sam's roll with me to Not The Government last night and shot it, as the final resident show seemed a fitting subject. I'll get the film processed when I get paid again - actually, I'll probably go sooner and charge it to my bloated credit card because I'm curious and impatient. In the meantime I need to fetch a fresh roll. I had to buy batteries for my camera and boy were those suckers expensive.

I'll also have the (digital) photos from the show for you later this week - it's too difficult to curate, edit, and upload during the week these days. And maintain an active social life. Which makes it hard to do that one biologically necessary activity...you know the one.

Sleep.

I want to get a fixed lens for my camera because I need to keep it on me more often and the zoom lens is just too much cock to carry around in these skinny jeans.

Case in point:

The other morning I was riding to work - mind you I leave while it's still dark outside - and I was about to cross Melrose when I noticed almost too late that the street was flooded with about two feet of water. Seemed the result of some sort of DWP mishap and I was left with an Oregon Trail dilemma: ford the river or caulk and float?

I rode a couple blocks down and crossed where the water was much more shallow.

Surreal.

All this water rushing down Melrose at a drowsy 5:30 in the morning, the street all lit up with utility trucks, and a curious fellow standing confused in the center of an intersection.

I cursed not having my camera on my back.
