As a result, I have no money to buy gifts with.
But!
I do have lots of time.
In our current economic situation, to go into debt over presents is foolish, and the heavy advertising push toward consumerism is insulting. I think that this year, more than ever, people will rediscover the gift of family and friendship.
So for Christmas (In a totally secular way), Yours Truly will be giving her time to charitable events in December, with each event selected with a loved one in mind. I hope to then write a card to each person, describing my volunteer work.
I recently found the best gift for my father & kid brother. The idea behind Help Portrait is simple, yet beautiful. On December 12th, professional photographers will gather all over the world to take portraits of those who have the least this year. The idea is to send parents home with cherished photos of their children, as well as capture moments of beauty - both within & without.
I know, at first I could not understand how a photograph could help someone when there are more pressing basic needs. But just take a look at this video and it will become apparent the significance of a beautiful portrait and the accompanying portrait process.
It's incredible, huh?
As you can imagine, I am tremendously excited for this opportunity to put positive energy into the world this holiday season.
In prior years, this time of the year has proved a great downer for me, when I've often felt alone and sad. As a result, I don't let myself feel the warm glowing cheer that inevitably permeates the air (I don't know how it happens, but it's always there!). But this year I am going to make an effort to remain positive, and I think that giving my time to others will help this Grinch heart grow and grow and grow, and hopefully the growth will never stop!
I am still looking for other events to volunteer at this December, so please send me suggestions!
Speaking of volunteer work, come on down to Bikerobabes tonight!
